Powder Metallurgy

This process is one of the most versatile forming operations available to the manufacturing engineer because of its number of possible variables. This program explains the importance of atomizing (a way of making powder metal) and then describes the steps taken to reform the powder into a usable part. The initial steps (1) making and combining powder, (2) cold pressing into small compressed pieces, and (3) preheating, introduce the hot isostatic pressing operation and the HIP process. Regulation size of parts is greatly improved with powder metallurgy because of the consistency that can be obtained in mixing metals. As do all manufacturing processes, it has limitations. These limits are explained along with other possible methods that may be more successful. Length: 13 minutes. Order #153
